The Psychology of Concussions
V. Parker
Pediatric neuropsychologist and St. Luke’s parent Dr. McDonough-Ryan visited the Upper School Introduction to Psychology class to talk about how concussions affect the developing brain.
St. Luke’s Upper School Introduction to Psychology class welcomed guest lecturer and St. Luke’s parent Dr. McDonough-Ryan, a pediatric neuropsychologist. Dr. McDonough-Ryan spoke about how concussions affect the developing brain. Students learned about the neurological, chemical and behavioral issues associated with head trauma.
Director of Character Education and Intro to Psychology teacher Kate Parker-Burgard said, “Dr. McDonough-Ryan had an engaging presentation filled with scientific facts and everyday anecdotes. The students were particularly interested in learning how gender, treatment, and age of concussive impact heavily affect the level of injury.” Senior Lexie DuPree added, “As someone who wants to study psychology it was amazing to have a parent who's in the field to spend the time to meet with us. I got so much out of her talk.”
