New Fall Art Exhibition

From Jeorge Yankura, Instructor of Photography

The Art Gallery at St. Luke’s School is pleased to announce a new exhibition, “Old Friends: Revisiting Artwork by Former Students,” which will be on display starting October 12. This exhibition features work from our permanent collection, which was created by curating selected works that were gifted to individual teachers and the school itself or acquired through the Senior Purchase Award program.

When teachers hear the names of students we’ve taught in the past, we tend to become delightfully overwhelmed by memories of these students. When art teachers see works created by former students, we respond likewise; we see the works and are transported back in time. We remember not only the students but also the hard work and tireless efforts required to create the pieces. We see the works and remember the first time each student wiped ink off a printmaking plate, learned how to use a palette knife to apply paint to a canvas, or controlled the light meter and depth of field on a camera. We remember the personality of each student, the ideas that she or he wanted to communicate through visual means, and we remember the joy and sense of great satisfaction experienced when the work was finished, framed, and placed on a gallery wall for all to see.

Looking at the works from this collection is like seeing old friends again. Although the students whose work is on display have long since departed St. Luke’s, they left us with wonderful gifts that represent their individual, unique visions of the world while they were here on the Hilltop. We are grateful to have these works that document their time at St. Luke’s and thrilled we can share them with the community.
