The Theory of Relativity: Where Math and Theater Connect
This year’s Upper School musical The Theory of Relativity, by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, features a collection of stories that highlight the wonder of human connection.

The Theory of Relativity, St. Luke’s 2021 US Winter Musical, presented a distinct opportunity to look at life's journey through a series of mathematical equations, word problems, and Einstein's physical laws of the universe. We tend to separate Science and Math from the Arts and treat them as wholly unrelated subjects. However, this musical demonstrates how random individuals connect and create something beautiful, much like atoms in the universe. When planning for the musical, I reached out to Upper School Math Teacher Shuja Khan to ask if he could write out equations to the word problems in the script's dialogue. Throughout the production, the audience will see physical equations that are being spoken in real time. Honestly, they are beautiful to look at, another language through which we, as humanity, communicate.
