Fifth Grade Poetry Presentations
S.A.
On April 19, St. Luke’s fifth grade students presented their poetic works during the annual Fifth Grade Poetry Showcase. Students, who have studied and written poetry throughout the year, had the privilege to work directly with the accomplished poet Georgia Heard this month. Heard is the founding member of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University and St. Luke’s Poet in (Virtual) Residence.
While working with Heard, students were able to sharpen their writing skills, express their creativity, and process current circumstances through their writing. For the showcase, each student selected one poem from their portfolio, revising it and writing an introduction and reflection about the poem and the writing process. Students then had the opportunity to practice their delivery before the presentation.
“I’m so proud of how the 5th-graders rose to the challenge of not only creating beautiful and insightful poetry but also presenting their creations, live for their parents and peers with the utmost poise and passion! It was an amazing performance that I will always remember and cherish,” shared Fifth Grade English Teacher Elaine Juran.
