Summer Items Collected for Open Door Shelter
S.A.
After a group of seventh grade students’ successful volunteer efforts on behalf of the Souper Bowl food drive this winter, they organized a summer items collection for the Open Door Shelter in Norwalk. During the summer, some families struggle to provide essentials and kid-friendly foods for their children. The Open Door Shelter tries to fill that need.
The items collected by St. Luke’s seventh graders ranged from easy-to-make meals, such as PB&J, microwaveable food, and breakfast bars, to summer toys, including sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and frisbees, to sunshine essentials, such as sunscreen, hats, and flip flops.
To encourage their classmates to participate, the group of seventh graders spoke in advance of the collection about the importance of donating items to families in our community. To celebrate the drive, the seventh grade held a beach party, complete with games, music, raffles, and snacks. Donations were collected at the party.
