Girls Varsity Tennis: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s girls varsity tennis team embarks on the 2022 season full of confidence, with a number of team members returning. The Storm welcomes back 10 players from the 2021 squad and has added younger talent, too.

This year, Layla Magnussen ‘22 and Maddie Fredericks ‘22 captain the team, and head coaches Brinley Ehlers and Tish Tregellas return to lead the program. Ehlers and Tregellas have been impressed with their two captains: “Layla and Maddie have already shown great leadership. We expect them to continue to lead throughout the season.”

The two coaches were extremely happy with GVT’s preseason workouts and tryouts at the Four Seasons Racquet Club in Wilton. “We are excited to have so many returning varsity players, but we also added some young talent during the tryout process. We had a great time with daily themes, team-bonding activities, fitness, and yoga. This was all in addition to the tennis we played. We really maximized our time together.”

SLS girls tennis opens the season with a home contest against Wilton High School on Monday, April 4, before a road trip to Fairchester Athletic Association rival Greens Farms Academy on Tuesday, April 12. This season, Ehlers and Tregellas expect their team to be competitive against every opponent but know the Dragons will provide a tough test early: “GFA are strong, so it will be a hard match straight out of the gate. Hopkins is probably the strongest team we will face, but Greenwich Academy is always extremely talented, too. We think we can be competitive with all the FAA teams, so we are excited for the season.”

In 2021, the Storm went 6-2 in FAA play and 7-2 overall. Its two losses were close contests against Hopkins and GA. The coaches hope to see the team challenge again: “We want our players to play aggressive tennis to the best of their abilities in every match. We will play as a team and cheer on each other throughout the season. If we can do these things, we can compete against anyone in this league.”

This season sees the return of both the FAA and New England tournaments. St. Luke’s will look to qualify for these events again in 2022.
