Eureka! St. Luke’s Theater Company Takes the Stage Next Weekend

S.A.
St. Luke’s Theater Company (SLTC) is excited to present two performances of the play Eureka Day on Friday, April 29, at 7:00pm, and Saturday, April 30, at 2:00pm, in the Wyckoff Family Blackbox Theater.

Written by Jonathan Spector in 2017, the play explores whether or not to vaccinate school-age children in the midst of a mumps outbreak. A lively debate ensues in this independent school community, where facts become subjective and every solution divisive, leaving the school’s leadership to confront the central question of our time: How can you build consensus when no one can agree on the truth?

The New York Times says: “Jonathan Spector’s lively portrait of a debate over mandatory vaccinations is the perfect play for our age of disagreement…characters who had seemed so easy to ridicule as stereotypes acquire a substance and specificity that inhibit both derision and facile categorization. It becomes possible to identify with each of these people…no matter what your feelings about vaccinations are. This means that Eureka Day…is not only one of the funniest plays to open this year, but it is also one of the saddest.”

"Theater challenges us to better understand the world around us. We cannot escape the current vaccine debate and the larger COVID-19 struggle that have consumed our lives for the last two years,” shared Dawn Fuller, St. Luke’s Theater Company Director. “When I came across this text, I was not only struck by the satire — it’s truly a hilarious piece of dramedy — but also, more importantly, the real human quandary it presents. SLTC is always eager to tackle important topics and view them through a dramatic lens, especially with laughs and tears. Eureka Day is no exception.”

Reservations and tickets are not required, but all attendees at campus events are expected to be fully vaccinated. Please contact Theater Department Chair John Conners for more information on these performances.
