St. Luke’s August Institute

St. Luke’s School offers inspiration and professional growth to new teachers.

First- and second-year teachers of fifth through twelfth graders are invited to join St. Luke’s August Institute, August 8-12, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, at St. Luke’s School, 377 North Wilton Road, New Canaan. This five-day intensive workshop is designed to give new teachers immediately transferable tools, strategies, activities, and training to run an effective and inclusive classroom.

During this workshop, participants will practice with fifty classroom activities tailored to their grade level, subject area, and school’s mission to make this a personalized experience. They will also learn twenty different classroom technology apps and programs and plan their first week of lessons.

Fellows Program Director Abby Abbott shared: “With time and bandwidth at a premium once the school year officially begins, new teachers will find this early August investment yields tremendous returns. Lesson planning templates, activities, strategies from instructional leaders, and an intentional and supportive space to practice, demos, and workshop ideas--all specifically designed with the participant’s school mission at the center--will ensure active learning begins from day one.”

Seven experienced educators are leading the workshop: Abby Abbott, St. Luke’s Fellows Program Director; Matt Bavone, St. Luke’s Academic Technology Coordinator; Mary Frederick, St. Luke’s Assistant Head of Upper School and Upper School Math Department Chair; Dr. Jaqueline Gallo, The Presentation School’s Head of School; Cyndy Jean, Hackley School’s Assistant Head of School for Community and Inclusivity; Kari Olsen, St. Luke’s Director of Counseling & Well-Being; and Emily Walsh St. Luke’s English Teacher.
