Another Magnifcent Seven for Girls Basketball
The St. Luke’s girls basketball team earned its seventh consecutive Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) Tournament title on Saturday, Feb. 25, with its 76-41 victory over Hamden Hall.
The Storm has also won seven straight regular-season titles and continues to set the FAA standard.
St. Luke’s controlled the game against the Hornets after a 12-0 run late in the first period gave them an 18-8 lead. With its disciplined approach, the Storm continued to stretch its advantage throughout the remainder of the game. Mackenzie Nelson ’23 scored a game-high 17 points. Camdyn Nelson ’25 scored 14, Ava Sollene ’23 added 12, Brielle Renwick ’23 scored 10, and Kaya Weiskopf ’24 had eight points.
St. Luke’s has won 80 consecutive FAA games (90 when non-league FAA games are included), in a remarkable run dating back to 2016.
The Storm now switches its attention to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Tournament, where it is the #1 seed in Class B. St. Luke’s hosts Lawrence Academy in the quarterfinal and hopes to win its first NEPSAC championship.
In last year’s final, the Storm lost in overtime to Brooks School but looks to return to the championship game on Sunday, March 5, at Loomis Chaffee School.
Co-captain Mackenzie Nelson was proud of her team and is eager to play in the New England tournament: “Winning seven straight FAA titles is difficult, especially because the other teams arrive every year looking to beat you. However, as a team, we practice hard every day, knowing our opponents are always going to give their best. Our team's biggest strength is its defense. We take pride in holding teams to not scoring many points, and we did that again. Our biggest goal is to finish the season strong and win the NEPSAC championship. That has been one of the goals all season, but now it’s our only focus.”
