St. Luke's pulls out thrilling 58-56 victory against arch-rival Brunswick!

Eddie Furth

After snow kept them out of the gym for most of the past two weeks, the St. Luke's Boys Thirds Basketball team came together on Thursday to play their best game of basketball this season.  The Storm defended their home court and held off Brunswick, who had defeated them by 21 two weeks earlier, to win 58-56.

Robert Wood, who finished with 10 points, had his best game of the year, proving he has unlimited potential as an athlete on the basketball court, and helping propel The Storm to victory with hard nosed defense, control on offense, and smart plays, at one point dribbling the length of the court and dishing off to Aiden Stone, who led all scorers with 14 points.  It was  the epitome of the smart, balanced attack the team used to win.

St. Luke's jumped out to an early lead as they used an inside/outside attack, dumping the ball down to forwards Aiden Stone, Robert Wood and Jackson Kleinert (3 points), and then relying on the outside shooting of Wiley Vehslage (8 points), Jacob Henny (11 points), Gardner Tregallas (9 points) and Tyler Gabriel (3 points) to leave Brunswick searching for an answer early.  After a surge, that brought the game even, St. Luke's was able to hold the lead until right before hafltime, where the score was even, 33-33.

Team Captain, Brian Williams led the Storm out of the locker room in the second half ready to take the lead.  Both teams came out strong, and Brunswick was able to take a 10 point lead with ten minutes left in the game.  Gardner Tregallas and Jacob Henny then took over with smart and efficient playcalling, backed up by two deep threes by Jacob Henny to pull the game even.

With two minutes left, The Storm had a 4 point lead until Brunswick slashed to the basket and cut the lead to 2 followed by another basket tying the game.  With under a minute to go, Aiden Stone hit the go-ahead basket on a layup, leaving Brunswick with an opportunity to tie or win the game.  The Storm would not relent, and on three posessions in the final 30 seconds, Brunswick could not get a look at the basket, as the defensive pressure overwhelmed them.

The St. Luke's Boys Thirds Basketball Team, in their defining moment of the season, celebrated a huge victory on the court together.

Storm on three . . . hard work on six . . .

The Thirds Team finishes the season with games against Masters School on February 9 and The Jewish School of Connecticut on February 14.
