“This past Thursday, New Canaan Crew (NCC) held its Annual Awards Banquet at the Italian Center in Stamford. “NCC”, which originated as the rowing program for New Canaan High School, has evolved into the umbrella organization into which the rowing programs of other Lower Fairfield County schools have been folded. Based at the Maritime Rowing Center in South Norwalk, NCC recently absorbed St. Luke’s School’s crew program, which began its existence at the same facility. This Spring season, NCC included 107 rowers from 19 schools, led by 8 coaches, who competed against other New England high schools at regattas held from Princeton, New Jersey to Lowell, Massachusetts.
By crewing tradition, rowers receiving medals (1st, 2nd or 3rd place finishes) in two season events qualify for varsity letters. St. Lukes Women rowers receiving letters in 2013 were Senior Sheetal Akole, and Sophomore Jenna Froland. Lettering Men’s rowers were Seniors Steven Gerasimoff, Alex Mauboussin and Graham Mink, and Sophomores Perry Barringer, Andrew Langalis and Peter Zamsky.
SLS Senior Graham Mink was the recipient of The Pettee Cup Award. Named after Mike Pettee, a late coach at NCC, the Pettee Cups are awarded to the men’s and women’s members who, in the opinion of their coaches, have demonstrated an outstanding spirit of enthusiasm for rowing, an unrestrained willingness to learn and the highest level of motivation.
Also at Thursday’s Banquet, SLS Seniors and Men’s Team Captains Steven Gerasimoff and Graham Mink presented their farewell speeches. Steven and Graham’s thoughtful remarks attested to how crewing has been meaningful to their development as student/athletes and young adults, and they expressed gratitude to coaches, parents and crewmates for their unwavering support. As such, rowers of all ages and their families in the hall that night heard words of inspiration and thanks from these two accomplished high school rowers.”
