SLS Student Wins Statewide Energy Contest

vgp
St. Luke’s School Mary Zech ‘17 recently won 1st place in the eleventh annual eesmartsStudent Contest. Mary’s project won the high school category, which asked students to design a community-based project to solve an energy-related issue in their city or town. Representatives from Eversource came to St. Luke’s School and presented Mary with her award.

Mary designed a hydroponic gardening system plan that would help underserved organizations in her community by providing them with nutritious food, while also saving energy. Mary and St. Luke's science teacher and mentor on this project, David Havens, have started planning the installation of the two hydroponic vegetable gardens for this summer. Mary received a $400 Amazon gift card and plaque commemorating her achievement in this category. In addition, she will receive a grant and technical assistance from Eversource and UI to help make her proposed project a reality before the next school year. “Thanks to the grant, we will have enough time and money to install gardens before students return to school,” said Havens. “As a result of Mary’s hard work and dedication, the gardens will be up and running in the fall and will provide fresh, nutritious vegetables to incoming students and their families all year long.”

Presented by Energize Connecticut in partnership with Eversource and the United Illuminating Company (UI), the eesmarts Student Contest invites Connecticut students in grades K-12 to create projects about energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability.
