SLS Middle School Debaters Win At Statewide Debate

From MS Debate Coach Frank Henson:

On Saturday, January 30, St. Luke's Middle School Debate Team participated in the second Connecticut Middle School Debate League debate of the year, held at Hamden Hall. In attendance were 8th graders Ruth Mercedes, Laura Mercedes, Marco Volpitta, Amelie Warneryd, Kaitlin Necakov, and Andrew Wilson; 7th graders included Danielle Naras, Caroline Janki, Marie Berliet, Zachary Amendola, Archer Goodwyn, Jack Briggs, Jack Foley, and Vincent DiTeodoro.

There were 147 debaters, representing 13 different schools from around the state. Each team debates three times, and after the results are tallied, a final debate between the two top teams is held before the entire assembly. The team of Ruth Mercedes, Marco Volpitta, and Laura Mercedes made it to the final and came in second. They delivered an outstanding debate, excelling in both argumentation and rhetoric. For all debates during the day, individual speakers on each team are given a score and ranked. Of the 147 debaters, Ruth Mercedes won 1st Speaker, and Laura Mercedes won 3rd Speaker. Congratulations to Ruth, Marco, and Laura, and to the entire St. Luke's Middle School team for their efforts.

This is the second year that St. Luke's has participated in debate at the middle school level. There are 33 middle school students in the program.
