Discovering Voices: Taking Flight...And Soaring

VGP
On November 20, Middle School students spent the day leaping, stretching, jumping, and flying as part of the Discovering Voices: Taking Flight program. The morning was filled with cross-curricular workshops designed to inspire new thinking and passions.

Students made their own hot air balloons, launched homemade rockets, learned how to survive in the woods, discovered a new voice through sign language and learned gravity-defying dance moves.

After the workshops, the entire Middle School came together in the Black Box Theater to share how they "took flight." The day concluded with the Blues Band concert where students and faculty soared to new musical heights.

For the first time, Discovering Voices will expand to include several more events. Middle School Music Chair Katie Kaplan described the program’s mission: “The goal is to expand and deepen interdisciplinary learning and create a platform for teachers/grade levels to enter into a more collaborative, innovative project-based approach to teaching. The November 20 Workshop Day was the kick off and will be followed by three days of Exploration in January, and a Sharing/Performance Day in the spring.”

The Taking Flight theme has been part of the MS Town Meetings with students sharing stories about social issues and people who "took flight" throughout history. There is also a bulletin board in the history wing that celebrates students "taking flight" within the SLS community.

We look forward to seeing the Discovering Voices program expand and rise throughout the year.
