The varsity hockey team tied King 4-4 on Wednesday, January 6.
On Wednesday, January 6 the varsity hockey team tied rival King in a tightly contested game. With the tie, the team is now 2-2-1 on the season.
The members of the Storm looked their best immediately out of the gate. For almost the entire first period, the boys dominated offensive possession and managed to fire several high quality shots on the Viking’s goalie. On defense, the team also excelled. Thanks to stellar goaltending from Evan Ruschil '18, and shutdown defense, the Storm shut out the Vikings in the first period. On the offensive side, despite immense pressure for the entire period, the Storm did not score a goal until the very end of the first. Will Foster ‘17 scored with 1:25 left in the first on a rebound goal to put the Storm up 1-0. Freshman C.J. Woodberry '19 took advantage of his team’s momentum and scored seconds later to give the Storm a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
The second period of play at the Stamford Twin Rinks saw a revamped Vikings squad. The Vikings got off to a quick start and quickly tied the game at 2-2. After a dramatic penalty shot goal, the Vikings took a 3-2 lead late in the 2nd period. However, much like the 1st period, the Storm kicked their play up a notch at the end of the 2nd. Paul Woodberry ‘17 put one in the back of the net with 1:00 left and tied the game at 3-3.
While the 1st period was characterized by Storm dominance, and the 2nd was characterized by Viking dominance, the third saw both teams locked in. Neither team had a noticeable advantage and both teams played stifling defense. However, Paul Woodberry’s slick moves resulted in an end to end unassisted rush that resulted in his second goal of the game at the 10:00 mark. With the score at 4-3, the Storm defensive bore down and looked destined to come away with the win.
An unfortunate Storm penalty with 2:00 left in the game gave King the opportunity to send the match into overtime. A fluke goal from the side of the net tied the game at 4-4. After a five minute overtime in which neither team was able to capitalize, the game concluded in a tie.
The Storm will look to win their next game against a talented Canterbury School team on Saturday, January 9th.
