On Monday, January 11, the boys varsity basketball squad defeated the Hopkins Hilltopers
St. Luke's Boys Varsity Basketball defeated a tough, senior-laden Hopkins squad on Monday night to move to 5-0 in the Fairchester Athletic Association and 9-1 overall. The Storm fell behind early, but was able to close the gap thanks to the long-range shooting of Andrew Varoli, who continues to light it up from deep. The first stanza was a back-and-forth affair, but the Hilltoppers held a 29-26 lead heading into halftime. The Storm quickly tied the game with with Varoli's fourth trifecta and never surrendered the lead again. The Storm slowly built the lead to as much as four before Hopkins managed to tie the score again at 37-37. From there, St. Luke's managed to extend the lead to as much as 14 and hold it at double digits for much of the half until the Hilltoppers were able to bring the margin down to nine in the final seconds.
St. Luke's was led by Walter Whyte, who scored 23 and battled inside with Hopkins big man Edens Fleurizard. Four other Storm players joined Whyte in double figures, including Jonas Harper, who had 18. Joel Boyce and Varoli both provided a much needed spark off the bench, chipping in 13 and 12 points respectively, and Jalen Latta did a great job attacking the rim to earn 10 points inside
The victory was especially sweet considering the results of last year's FAA tournament. The Storm lost to the Hilltoppers 58-41 in the 2014-2015 FAA semi finals. The Storm's regular season victory this season bodes well for the team's future success.
St. Luke's returns to the hardwood on Friday evening for a 6:00pm tilt against league rival Brunswick.
