Girls Varsity Basketball Sinks Convent of the Sacred Heart
On Tuesday February 2, the Storm defeated Convent of the Sacred Heart 49-35.
On Tuesday, January 2, the St. Luke’s girls varsity basketball team improved their overall record to 14-2, and 7-0 in the FAA with a road win over the Convent of the Sacred Heart.
In almost every contest this season, the Storm has looked nearly unbeatable. However, for the majority of the first half, the members of the Convent of the Sacred Heart team, who were 4-9 overall and 0-4 in the FAA going into the game, posed a threat to the Storm’s normally dominant offensive play. In fact, with only five minutes to play in the first half, the Storm was only up 15-12.
A series of turnovers and missed shots prevented the Storm from running away with the game early. However, after a timeout before the last five minutes of the half, the St. Luke’s stormed the court with their usual athleticism, and scoring prowess. The Storm went on a 15-2 run to finish the quarter, and went into the second half with a large 30-14 lead.
In the second half, the members of the St. Luke’s squad did not quite recapture the same intensity they had exhibited in the waning minutes of the first. They were, however, able to keep the game firmly in control. With the help of superb shooting from captain Sydney Lowery ‘17, who scored 20 points in the game, Maya Klein ‘18 (10pts), McKenna Frank ‘18 (9pts), and Elizabeth Laub ‘18 (4pts), Sacred Heart was unable to mount a comeback.
The final score was 49-35. As the regular season quickly comes to a close, the win over Sacred Heart is another step in the right direction for the Storm. St. Luke’s has three more regular season games to play, two of which are against FAA rivals Rye Country Day School (February 9) and King (February 18).
