St. Luke's Hockey Victorious In Rematch Against King

On Monday, February 1, the Storm defeated the Vikings 5-1.
On Monday, February 1, the varsity hockey team was granted a second chance to defeat long time rival King – this time on home ice. In the Storm’s first game against the Vikings this season, which was played at the Stamford Twin Rinks, the members of the St. Luke’s squad could not hold off King’s offensive onslaught. The result was a bittersweet 4-4 tie. However, in the February 1 rematch, the Storm looked like an entirely different team as they cruised to a 5-1 victory over King, the champion of the FAA regular season.

It was clear from the start of the game that the members of the Storm were determined to prove themselves against the Vikings, and vice-versa. Despite King’s hope to bury the Storm early, goalie Evan Ruschil ‘18 remained calm and collected in between the pipes. His efforts kept King off of the scoreboard in the first period. His Will Frossell ‘18 took advantages of the offensive opportunities he generated and put two pucks in the back of the net. Going into the second period, the Storm had a solid 2-0 lead.

In the first minute of the second, a seemingly revamped Vikings offense quickly snuck one past Ruschil to make the score 2-1. However, St. Luke’s almost immediately responded a minute later as Charlie Whitely ‘17 added another point to the Storm’s goal column to make the score 3-1. After the two goals, both teams settled into a highly physical, defensive style of play.

The third period was much like the second, as neither St. Luke’s nor King was able to get the edge over their opponent. With three minutes left in regulation, and the score still 3-1, the Vikings were afforded a huge opportunity in the form of a Storm penalty. With the clock ticking down, and King’s desperation mounting, the Vikings goaltender was pulled for an extra skater. Evan Ruschil was once again able to swat away King’s attack, and Paul Woodberry ‘17 created enough room on the ice to put the game out of reach with an empty netter. In the last forty-five seconds Garret Lowry ’19 added another goal in the form of a rifle of a shot from the point.

The Storm’s 5-1 victory over King comes at an important time in the season. With the playoffs rapidly approaching, the momentum the team absorbed from the previously undefeated Vikings might prove indispensable in the Storm’s quest to win a second straight FAA title. The Storm is now 6-2-2 on the season.
