Longstanding Tradition: Relishing a Great Read

VGP
Head of School Mark Davis has a quiet, ten-year tradition which he relishes: reading to Mrs. Olsen’s fifth grade class. Originally, he read Rikki-Tikki-Tavia childhood favorite. Several years ago, Davis switched to Lois Lowry’s Crow Call. Davis said, "This beautiful story explores the relationship between a child and her father returning from World War II." The fifth graders and Davis take the time to explore the book’s intricacies from the artwork to the vocabulary to its underlying messages. "The students’ great curiosity and ability to recognize literary devices is a wonderful reflection of their teachers’ pedagogy," Davis shared.
