CAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference

GF
From Gabby Finley '17:

This past Sunday, Green's Farms Academy hosted 620 excited participants at the annual CAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference. Thirty-six from St. Luke’s attended including faculty, Middle and Upper School students.

The conference began with speaker Alex Myers, who was the first transgender male to attend Harvard University and also the author of Revolutionary. St. Luke's attendee, Charlie Hobbs said, "It was great to see a positive story from a trans person. Too often, the media portrays trans people in tragedy."

In the afternoon session, we split into various groups —the middle school group (grades 7 and 8), the high school 101 group, and the senior group—which were all facilitated by high school students. Eleven of the group facilitators were St. Luke’s students. The agenda consisted of many thought-provoking activities and discussions based on social justice and equity in our respective independent schools.

Every year the conference focuses on a different social identifier, and every year, students from various Connecticut independent schools keep coming back.
