Middle School Debate Final: St. Luke’s vs. St. Luke’s

VGP
From MS Debate Coach Frank Henson:

St. Luke's Middle School Debate concluded the 2015-2016 season with another hand-wringing final round debate for the last Connecticut Middle School Debate League (CMSDL) tournament of the academic year. The CMSDL held three debates this past season and St. Luke's participated in all of them.

At Smith Middle School in Glastonbury on Saturday, April 30, 168 middle school debaters, representing 16 schools, debated the resolution, This House would provide a path to citizenship for immigrants living illegally in the US.

St. Luke's brought 23 students to the debate, eight teams, and in the championship round, it was 8th graders Laura Mercedes, Ruth Mercedes, and Marco Volpitta against their classmates, Amelie Warneryd and Kaitlyn Necakov, a two person team. The team of Mercedes-Mercedes-Volpitta won, and Marco Volpitta won First Speaker for the tournament, an award based on individual scores for all three qualifying debates. It felt déjà vu because these two teams squared off for the championship at the end of the 2014-2015 season.

St. Luke's is proud to have such active and engaged participation in the Middle School debate program. For this season, there were 36 debaters on the team, split evenly between 7th and 8th graders. We look forward to the coming season with more valuable learning and skills building experiences.
