A Day At the Farm

VGP
From Director of Character Education Kate Parker-Burgard:

On Tuesday, the 10th grade spent the day on the farm doing service work. As part of an immersive experience with organic gardening and food justice, the students were divided up into two groups. One group went to a large CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm in NY state devoted to raising organic meat and vegetables. The other group went to a large community garden in Bridgeport devoted to making garden space available to members of the local community. Both organizations consider education to be a critical component in their work and St. Luke's students were eager learners. From hearing about food deserts and the value of fresh produce to observing sustainable methods of gardening, our students had a lot to learn while weeding, mulching, and planting for these organizations. Each site noted that our students moved them a full week forward in their work after only a few hours of working there.

If families are interested in getting involved, the community garden in Bridgeport is eager for more volunteers (and it was an easy trip from St. Luke's—only 30 minutes away). Please contact Kate Parker-Burgard for more information.
