Two 8th Graders Raise Money for American Indian College Fund

VGP
From Ashley Kelley ‘20:

Phoebe Kurth and I raised $288 for the American Indian College Fund and have been invited to present the check during a festival this month. We were inspired to help Native Americans after we read the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. The book explains the hardships that come with living on a reservation. Our amazing English teacher, Jim Carroll, assigned an extra credit project where we could help Native Americans, and we knew it was the perfect opportunity to make a difference.

Earlier in the spring, Phoebe and I set up a lemonade stand outside of Mackenzies in New Canaan. In four hours, we raised $288 for The American Indian College Fund (a nonprofit that offers Native Americans educational programs and college scholarships). On June 12, I will present the check to the founder of the American Indian College Fund, Cheryl Crazy Bull, on stage at the Drums Along the Hudson Festival. The Drums Along the Hudson Festival is a Native American and multicultural festival. I am very excited and can't wait!
