VGP
Middle School math teacher Susan Garnett was this year’s recipient of the Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award. This award goes to a Middle School teacher who inspires students to fulfill their potential. This teacher demonstrates deep commitment and affection for students, and most importantly, has a distinctive style and approach to teaching.
Head of the Middle School Gareth Fancher shared this about Garnett when she received the award: "From the first day of school until the final bell rings in June, it is abundantly clear to everyone that the total experience of every student—academic, social, emotional, co-curricular—is of utmost importance to this very special teacher. Caring, tough, organized, innovative, creative, able to solve almost any problem or find paths around almost any obstacle and always—always available and willing to help anyone who asks. The first to arrive and likely the last to leave everyday, her presences and contributions to the school community are widespread and immeasurable—from teaching to advising to coaching and chaperoning. With confidence, empathy and no-nonsense approach, her ability to relate, understand and connect with Middle School is nearly unparalleled."
Past recipients of the Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award include Science teacher David Havens (2015), English teacher Jim Carroll (2014) and 5th grade teacher Melissa Zurkowski (2013).
