St. Luke's Volleyball Season Preview

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Volleyball team members are really looking to build on their efforts of last year and mount a real challenge towards the FAA and WWNEPSA in 2016.

Led by Head Coach Abby Bielski and Assistant coach John ‘Doc’ Higgins, the team have been working extremely hard during preseason and are looking forward to showcasing their talent.

Bielski said, “Preseason was tough but also really fun. We tried to bring in a lot of new ideas in terms of fitness and conditioning to help break up the monotony of it all. We brought in a boxing instructor, a Zumba instructor and also incorporated some yoga into our sessions, which the girls loved.”

Bielski, in her third season with the Varsity team, believes things are looking very good for the entire program and she is looking forward to seeing what they can achieve this year. She said, “The girls came back in good shape and have all worked hard during the off-season. We have a lot of new plays—really focusing on the technical aspect of the game rather than the fundamentals. We have the players, we have the talent and we have the numbers to really run the more complex offenses this season. You will see that when we play.”

Bielski has named three senior captains in Ana Luque, Caitlyn Hughes and Alexa Vogel and is excited by what they bring to the team. “They all bring something different to the table,” Bielski said. “They have all been members of the team and the St. Luke’s community for a very long time so they know the expectation and the game.”

Coach Bielski sees real depth throughout the squad and is expecting to see great things from some of the younger members too, “We have a very strong Junior class this year who play both front row and back row. We have a number of promising Sophomores and Freshmen too. Tamia Fulton ‘19 is doing phenomenal work in the back row, Syd Cummings ‘19 is learning a new position in the front row, playing middle hitter and Riley Page ‘19 will be a big contributor as she gets a little older.”

The St. Luke’s Volleyball program continues to go from strength to strength which Bielski puts down to the bond between everyone involved. She added, “Our goals are always to create a feeling of community and sisterhood and create a real team atmosphere. We are obviously doing a lot of things on the court but we also have a lot of service projects on the calendar this year too which will help the team bond off the court.”

The Varsity Volleyball team started the season beating Hopkins at home before two tough losses to Hamden Hall and Convent of the Sacred Heart. They will look to bounce back on Saturday 9/24 at home vs Stormers.
