Assembly with Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer
VGP
From US History Chair Jason Haynes:
“One of the top assemblies we’ve had in all my years at St. Luke’s.” This is how US Math Chair Jeff Kress described Tuesday’s event with former White House Press Secretary and St. Luke's parent Ari Fleischer and SLS 8th-12th grade students. Between the heated political season and the Presidential debate which aired the night before, there was plenty to discuss. Fleischer talked about the current Presidential election, as well demographics and political patterns in our nation’s history. He encouraged students to engage deeply in national politics and answered more than a dozen students’ thoughtful questions. Students challenged Fleischer to address topics ranging from partisanship, to the failures of third party candidates, to his willingness to support a candidate who he has so openly criticized. During his visit, Fleischer made it clear he was not trying to sway any opinions and stressed that voting was both a powerful and personal decision.
Associate Director of College Counseling Stephen Vehslage and I look forward to hosting some political lunches to continue the conversations started during Fleischer’s assembly. This lunch series will be open to all Upper School students.
