Storm Stun KO In Overtime

Dan Clarke

The St. Luke’s Field Hockey team enjoyed an excellent road victory against Kingswood Oxford School over the weekend winning 4-3 in overtime.

The Storm traveled to West Hartford to face a strong KO team and found themselves a goal down after just one minute. The visitors regrouped and responded well tieing the game at 1-1 when Katie Barton finished a Clare Armstrong pass just after the twenty-five minute mark.

The Wyvern’s would take the lead again when they caught the St. Luke’s defense flat on the weak side to take a 2-1 lead at half-time.

St. Luke’s came out strong for the second period and quickly made it 2-2 within a minute of the restart when Cayley Stonehouse finished nicely after some good work by Kendall Boege.

The Storm would find themselves behind in the game for the third time with just over twenty-five minutes to play but refused to give up. After some excellent play in the midfield, Abbey O’Meara scored on a Katherine Pellegrino pass to make it 3-3 at the end of regulation. KO had 8 offensive corners during the end of the second half and couldn’t convert, sending the game into overtime.

With both teams pushing for the winning goal, The Storm defense held strong with GK Emma Cropper making 12 saves in goal. The sudden victory came when Cayley Stonehouse stunned the home crowd finding a great finish from an O’Meara assist with 5:56 on the clock.

Head Coach Brinley Ehlers was thrilled with her team afterwards. She said, “This win was a total team effort! We were the comeback kids after being down three times and coming back each time to and then win the game. We did not give up and we pushed harder each time.”

“In some games this season, it has been hard to come back when down and this was not the case today. We played with a lot of heart and fire today. This was just the turning point we needed to spark the rest of the season.”

“We were on the losing side of an OT sudden victory 7v7 earlier in the season so I am thrilled they got to feel it from the winning side.”

The victory improved the Storm to 4-5-1 overall on the season. They continue on Thursday with a huge FAA contest at Rye Country Day School before another road trip on Friday to Cheshire Academy for which there will be a fan bus to and from SLS.
