Girls Varsity Soccer Shutout Millbrook For Another Win
Dan Clarke
The Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to Millbrook School on Monday afternoon and came away with a 2-0 victory following goals by Caroline Thompson ‘18 and Kelly McKenna ‘17.
The Storm started the game well dominating much of the possession but found it difficult to break down a stubborn Millbrook defence. The girls continued to probe and eventually got the breakthrough when Junior Captain Thompson fired a shot from around twenty-five yards that went in off the crossbar midway through the first half.
St. Luke’s continued to work hard after the goal and created a few more opportunities which were well saved by the Millbrook goalkeeper. The Storm defence were resolute with centre back pairing Thaise Sudano ‘18 and Elizabeth Labriola ‘19 as well as full backs Jackie Thompson '20 and captain Natlaie Bachman '17 shutting down any threat from the Millbrook forwards to give the visitors the 1-0 halt-time lead.
The second half continued in much the same way before Senior Captain McKenna broke clear and finished calmly under the on-rushing goalkeeper to make it 2-0 with just over half an hour to play.
Millbrook responded well to conceding the second goal and forced St. Luke’s Goalkeeper Brittany Barton ‘17 into a couple of important saves to maintain the shutout.
Head coach Dan Clarke was pleased with the performance and the shutout. He said, “It was a good performance all round. Millbrook have some very good players and are well organized so we had to patient. It was a great strike from Caroline to break the deadlock and then Kelly just can’t stop scoring at the minute. I thought defensively we were very sound and the few times Brittany was called upon she did great.”
St. Luke’s improved to 4-2-1 on the season and continue with a big FAA contest away to School of the Holy Child this Saturday at 11am.
