From Director of Character Education Kate Parker-Burgard:
Eye-opening, powerful, encouraging, fulfilling, surprising, insightful and enlightening were just some of the words that students used to describe the Upper School assembly on Wednesday, October 26. Through the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), St. Luke’s Upper School ran a day-long experience which focused on the social roles that people play.
Through a student panel, skit and open mic, students explored the roles of perpetrator, bystander, target and ally and how they have affected people in our community. The bravery and sensitivity demonstrated by those who shared their stories during the assembly encouraged students and faculty to continue sharing in smaller sessions in the afternoon. These groups were facilitated by a team of students and faculty who had trained for more than seven hours with representatives from the ADL. These leaders skillfully led their groups through an important workshop which ended with everyone identifying how to be a better ally and next steps for moving forward with what we’ve learned.
After the event, one group facilitator Carolina Warneryd '19 said, "I thought today was a great experience for our school. I was so surprised by the number of people that took risks and shared personal experiences, both at the open mic and during the group sessions." Carolina continued, "It was inspiring and touching to hear some of the things people have gone through. The ADL program was really instrumental in helping so many share their own stories." Another group facilitator, Thaise Sudano '18 said, "I thought that ADL showed the true character of St. Luke's. The sense of community was palpable as those that pushed themselves out of their comfort zones were received with open arms. It was really special to be a part of a school where we have so much trust in each other."
