First Model UN Summit at Princeton University

V. Parker
From Model UN Advisor Abby Bielski:

For four days in November, the SLS Model United Nations team traveled to Princeton University in New Brunswick, NJ for its first conference of the year. Hosted by the Princeton International Relations Council, more than 850 students convened for the November 17-20 summit designed to engage students with some of the same contemporary issues that confront international policymakers, officials, and diplomats today.

Teams were assigned a different country for the conference and St. Luke’s represented Egypt. Our students did an outstanding job pursuing Egyptian national interests while navigating complex regional and international issues. In preparation, students learned about current global challenges including nuclear proliferation, terrorism and disaster response, militarization of police forces, military intervention, and refugee/immigration issues.

During the various committee sessions, our ten St. Luke’s students worked hard to translate their research into alliance blocks, addendums, draft legislation, and eventually, resolutions. This year, our entire team either penned successful resolutions or served as a sponsor/signatory for a passed resolution. I was proud to observe that throughout the discussions, collaboration, and compromise, our St. Luke’s students were educated and engaged global citizens.

Participants in this recent Model UN included: Co-Presidents Carolina Warneryd ‘19 and Mary Grace Thomas ‘19, Ellie Haljun ‘19, Alexandra Schwartz ‘19, Nick Dicorpo ‘20,  Lucas Manocherian ‘20, Ruth Mercedes ‘20, Laura Mercedes ‘20, Marco Volpitta ‘20 and Chris Walsh ‘20

We are looking forward to future events and planning at least two more conferences. Our Cornell University event is now fully booked, we do have a few openings remaining for our Times Square conference February 20-23.
