MS Artwork of the Week: Jenna Volpitta '21, Julia Bazata '21, Samantha Schwartz '21

Haley Wulfman
There are three artists of the week this week and the artworks all were completed as part of the same “mashup” project. So, when two or more ideas collide to create something entirely new, in the 8th grade classes, we call that a MASHUP. As you discover the artworks of the week this week, take a look at how the artworks are made up of a few different ideas, mixed and mashed all together.

JENNA VOLPITTA
Look closely at Jenna Volpitta’s painting. Can you see that the Christmas tree, wound in long strings of lights, is actually an illusion—its made up of different art supplies? You should have seen her working in the studio… meticulously measuring crayons, markers, colored pencils, Sharpies,  and paintbrushes against each other to see just how she’d need to organize them into that perfect pine tree shape.

JULIA BAZATA
In Julia Bazata’s painting, look at that lightbulb—shattered at the ends in just the right way so we might actually be able to believe, maybe, that some chef cracked it on the side of their mixing bowl, or maybe accidentally dropped it and let the egg spill out all over the counter. This lightbulb and egg mashup is so creative and so convincing that we actually want to believe it’s real. Look at the way Julia painted the light on the silvery end of the bulb, for example—can’t you almost feel the metal glimmering off the paper?

SAMANTHA SCHWARTZ
Speaking of unbelievable light, did you notice why Samantha Schwartz’s eyeball planet seems to glow out from the purple galaxy around it? Among other things, her highlights and shaded areas are spot on, and it seems as if it’s truly a sphere. The colors (blue of the iris, the aqua  of the planetary rings, and the purple of the galaxy) all work together beautifully, too. And, did you notice the tiny little noses and mouths floating around behind the eye planet? Imagine what kinds of faces could happen, just based on where the different parts happen to be floating in outer space.

This week, the artists really knocked it out of the park. Into outer space, actually…
