Meeting History: St. Luke’s Juniors Interview Senior Citizens

From Director of Character Education Kate Parker-Burgard

As our 11th grade students wrapped up a year of study of American History and Literature, they had a chance to interview people who had lived most of their lives in the 20th century.

On the morning of May 30, the entire junior class traveled to several senior residences and talked with people in those communities about their experiences. This hands-on learning was a wonderful opportunity for our juniors to engage with and value the contributions of our elderly neighbors while developing interview skills.

The students headed out to the interviews with positive attitudes and returned in great spirits. Stories of women getting the right to be educated, food scarcity during WWII, working on Apollo 9, and auditioning for the Rockettes were just a few of the rich tales our juniors heard.

St. Luke’s juniors continued the activity when they returned to school by writing up the stories they had heard earlier in the day. These stories will be shared with the senior residents who were interviewed and their families. The following senior residences were visited: Waveny Cares (New Canaan), New Canaan Inn, Brightview (Norwalk), Maplewood (Norwalk), Sunrise Assisted Living (Stamford) and The Villa at Stamford.
