Boys Soccer Edges Hopkins in FAA Clash

Dan Clarke
The Boys Varsity Soccer team beat the reigning FAA Champions Hopkins School on Wednesday, September 27, as Senior captain CJ Woodberry netted the only goal.

After a very tight opening to the game, St. Luke’s took the initiative when Max Mitchell ‘20 played a great ball behind the Hilltoppers defense. Woodberry, who had made a lung-busting run up the field, took one touch to control before shooting across the goalkeeper into the far corner.

St. Luke’s was dealt a blow 15 minutes into the game when Junior captain and talisman Phil Platek had to leave the field due to injury. However, despite a lot of pressure from Hopkins, the Storm managed to get into halftime with the 1-0 lead.

The second half was a very even contest as St. Luke’s remained well organized defensively and looked to hit the home side on the break. Freshman Michael Riley worked tirelessly as the lone striker for the Storm with midfield support coming from Jake Kavan ‘20 and Julian Velez ‘20.

The Storm’s back line of Kenny Lam ‘19, Bear Crystal ‘20, Desmond Pratt ‘21, Lars Ernberg ‘20, Thomas Besgen ‘20 and Woodberry remained resolute the entire game to frustrate the Hopkins offense and earn the shutout win.

Head Coach Ryan Fairhurst was thrilled with his team’s performance: “I am delighted with the result. The team gave absolutely everything for 90 minutes. Our defense, in particular, was very solid again which helped us get another clean sheet but the goal was of real quality too. I am so happy for the boys and hope we can keep the momentum going.”

The victory sees the Storm improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in FAA league play after an impressive start to the season.

Next up: Boys Varsity Soccer travels to The King School on Friday, September 28, for another huge FAA contest at 4pm.
