Delivering Warmth on a Cold, Cold Night: SLS Midnight Run 2015
DSmock
Sub-freezing temperatures did not keep the Class of 2015 from making the first wave of this year's Midnight Run to New York City to deliver warm clothing, food and essential items to those in need. In a heartfelt letter to the St. Luke's community, Upper School Health and Wellness Coordinator Camille Demarco-Havens describes the experience and thanks the many hands that made this opportunity for service possible:
Dear St. Luke's Community,
A warm hearted thank you to the seniors that went on the Midnight Run last evening. They were engaged and extremely helpful to our homeless friends. It was amazing to see the students spring into action and help distribute clothing, food, socks, hats, backpacks… to so many in need (40+ people). By the time we were finished with the first stop we only had a hand full of coats left. Our second stop was just as populated. Jokes were told, songs were sung, and connections were made. At our last stop, our guide Malcolm spoke with all the students about the gift they gave so many people that evening. It was a beautiful way to end our experience.
The success of such a project requires tremendous help behind the scenes. Michele Quindlen and Jennifer Kelley were the senior class Midnight Run Community Service project leaders. They were instrumental in the organization of the many different aspects of the project. I would also like to thank all the senior parent committee leaders for their dedication to this project. Their commitment gave the Run the momentum needed to result in such a positive experience for all. Lisa O'Gorman was our star making soup, hot cocoa, and preparing 150+ hard-boiled eggs and turkey portions for the 150 sandwiches.
A special shout out to Brinley Ehlers for helping us pack the midnight run van.
Everyone played an important role in last night’s success. Thank you for all of your devotion to such worthy cause.
