Congratulations to Walter Whyte ‘17, Joel Boyce ‘17 and Sydney Lowery ‘17 who have all been nominated for the 2017 McDonald’s All-American games which will be held in Chicago on March 29.
Whyte of New Haven, CT and Boyce of Queens, NY, are two of only three boys nominated from the State of Connecticut, alongside Tremont Waters of Notre Dame High School in West Haven, while Lowery is one of only two on the girls’ side, nominated with Casey Carangelo of Thomaston High School.
The three-day event is the high school All Star game to play in and this year marks the 40th anniversary of the event. The list of Alumni makes impressive reading with some of the game's greatest ever players such as Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neil, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James playing in the contest over the years.
The rosters for this year’s games will be announced in February but will be selected from the state to state list of nominees.
St. Luke’s Head Coach Drew Gladstone was delighted for the two Seniors to be nominated, “For them to be recognized as nominees for this is really special. I am very proud to be able to say I coach these guys but Walter and Joel deserve all the credit for their hard work and willingness to get where they want to be and achieve their goals. They have separated themselves in terms of their work and have sacrificed a lot to be where they are.”
Lowery, a Shelton native who is nearing 2000 points in her St. Luke’s career, was excited about the prospect of playing in the 16th annual girls event: “It feels great to be nominated and I think it shows that if you put the work in good things happen.” The Senior who will be playing at Boston College next year added, “I think coming to St. Luke’s has helped me a lot and the school’s motto of ‘Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve’ really resonated with me. I now try to instill the same work ethic into the younger players at the school and serve as a role model to them.
Further information on the event can be found at the McDonald's All American games official website.
