It was a terrific Thursday evening for three of our varsity teams as Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball and Varsity Hockey all won their semifinal matchups to advance to the FAA finals on Saturday 2/25.
GVB took to the court first and put in another dominant display against The Master School(NY). The Storm raced into a 20-2 lead inside the first few minutes and didn’t look back, eventually winning 66-37 to set up a championship decider against Greenwich Academy.
Head Coach Matt Ward said after the game, "It's definitely a great feeling to get back to the FAA championship game. We entered the season not really talking about the FAA or NEPSAC tournaments, let alone the championships, so to be here now, with it right in front of us, and the opportunity to repeat and do it at home is pretty special. These girls have worked so hard to be successful this season. Saturday will be fun."
Boys Basketball followed the girls and were also drawn against The Panthers of Dobbs Ferry. After a strong start, Luke’s were pegged back by the visiting team and found themselves down 12-14 with just over six minutes to play in the first half. Following a timeout by Head Coach Drew Gladstone, the Storm went on a 23-3 run to take a 35-17 lead into halftime which they would maintain on their way to a 62-39 victory. BVB will now play Greens Farms Academy in the Saturday’s final.
Gladstone said after the contest: “We got a huge spark off of the bench from both Jackson Ryan and John Wisdom and once we got a bit of a lead the rest was history. These kids have worked so hard and have been through so much this year. It is great to get back to the championship. It’s great to have both our boys and girls’ teams in the finals. To host a boy’s and girl’s FAA championship doubleheader is a real gift and we are going to treat it as such.”
As all this was unfolding on the Hilltop, the St. Luke’s Hockey team was locked in another battle with The Harvey School at Stamford Twin Rinks. The Storm got off to a great start and goals from Will Frossell ‘18, CJ Woodberry ‘19 and Jack Neafsey ‘19 gave them a 3-0 advantage with seven minutes to play in the second period. However, two quick goals from Harvey cut the lead to 3-2 with one to play.
Luke’s came out strong after the interval and an early goal from Woodberry would extend the lead to 4-2 and send the Storm into the championship game against Rye Country Day School.
Head Coach Zach Brusko said after the victory, “ We came into this season with the goal of meeting Rye in another FAA championship game. Like every team, we have had our ups and downs, injuries and sickness, but we never lost sight of our common goal. We met that goal last night, and we intend to take full advantage of this special opportunity on Saturday afternoon.”
Assistant coach Graham Foster added, “There is real unity in this team and everyone has pulled together and stepped up. The joy, and friendship, in the locker room, on the bench and on the ice is contagious. I do not know if we will win on Saturday, but I do know that this team will remember this season for a long time.”
