Girls Varsity Tennis Crowned NEPSAC Class C Champs

Dan Clarke
St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Tennis successfully defended the New England Class C title on Sunday, May 21 after beating Concord Academy in the final 4-0.

The win capped off an excellent season for the Storm in which the team claimed the FAA Doubles title and finished with an overall record of 11-3.

The squad reached Sunday’s championship game after a nail-biting win over The King School in the semi-final on Saturday, May 20 by a score of 4-3.

The two teams met earlier in the season with the Storm winning 5-2 but Saturday’s match-up proved to be a much closer contest as Cameron Stonehouse ‘17 lost to #1 singles match to Stella Silver 1-6, 2-6 and Hannah Amendola ‘19 lost the #2 singles to Callie Bartimer 5-7, 3-6.

However, Maddie Harris ‘19 defeated Charlotte Freund 6-0, 6-2 in the #3 singles and Elizabeth Labriola ‘18 won the #4 singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Cat King.

The match was tied 3-3 after St. Luke’s #1 doubles pair Cayley Stonehouse ‘17 and Cierra Kitt ‘19 won their match 6-0, 6-1 but #2 doubles Grace Fitzgibbon ‘18 and Caroline Nevin ‘18 fell 4-6, 1-6.

The Storm would not be denied the chance to repeat as New England champions though as #3 doubles pairing Emma Tregellas ‘17 and Clare Armstrong ‘17 gave SLS the crucial fourth point with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Sunday’s final proved to be much more straightforward for GVT as they raced to the four points they needed to lift the trophy for the second year in a row.

The undefeated #1 doubles team of Cayley Stonehouse and Kitt won 6-1, 6-0 to finish the season at 17-0 and Amendola earned the second point at #2 singles winning easily 6-1, 6-1. Seniors Tregellas and Armstrong, playing in the #3 doubles spot won 6-3, 6-0 to make it 3-0 before Cameron Stonehouse came from behind in the first set to win 6-4, 6-1 to win the match for the Storm.

Head Coach Brinley Ehlers was extremely proud of her team: “This weekend’s wins were a total team effort, especially since we were playing the 4 singles/3 doubles format. This team played with a lot of heart. I am so happy for our Seniors who all won their matches in the finals against Concord. This win was sweet and very well deserved. I am so proud of each and every member of this team.”
