The 2025 Spring season marked a defining chapter for SLS Athletics, filled with record-breaking performances, program firsts, and a remarkable postseason run across multiple varsity sports. Four teams advanced deep into the playoffs. Two brought home championship titles. All elevated the standard of what it means to be a Storm student-athlete.
This season was not just about wins and titles. It was about leadership, resilience, and school spirit that could be felt on every sideline. From the courts to the fields, athletes gave the SLS community plenty to be proud of and even more to look forward to.
Boys Varsity Tennis: Making History as NEPSAC Champions
For the first time in program history, boys varsity tennis qualified for the NEPSAC postseason tournament and ultimately captured the NEPSAC Class C Championship.
Under the leadership of head coach Frank Russo, the team defied expectations as they stormed their way to the NEPSAC title. Their journey was defined by strong performances and unwavering trust in one another that carried them through every round.
The team was led by Captain Bryson Baker ‘26, whose steady presence and leadership set the tone for the group. At 1st Singles, Todd Cannaliato ‘25 was a consistent force. He will continue his tennis career at Washington & Lee University, one of the most competitive Division III programs in the country.
This title was more than a win—it was a glimpse at what the future holds for boys tennis at SLS.
Varsity Softball: Back-to-Back FAA Champions and a Bright Future Ahead
The varsity softball team delivered one of the most successful seasons in school history, winning both the FAA regular season and the FAA Tournament Championship. Under the leadership of head coach Elizabeth Joseph, fondly known as “Coach Beezer,” the team maintained its dominance in the league and made it all the way to the NEPSAC Semifinals.
With no seniors on the playing roster this season, the team’s combination of youth and skill made this run especially exciting. Caroline D'Onofrio '26 consistently dominated the circle and set the tone in every game she started. Captains Ellie Fatsi ‘26 and Lucy Millones ‘27 brought poise and focus that anchored the lineup. First baseman Lucia Biasotti ‘28 became known for her game-changing home runs and aggressive style of play. The team’s catcher, Makena Woodfork ‘29, commanded the field like a veteran. Team manager Faith Creary ‘25 was also an integral part of the team’s spirit and camaraderie.
The team’s back-to-back FAA Tournament titles are a testament to their consistency and work ethic. With their entire roster returning next year, the future of Storm Softball has never looked brighter.
Varsity Baseball: FAA Champions with Heart, Hustle, and Unmatched Energy
Varsity baseball brought home the FAA Tournament Championship this spring. Head Coach Sam Colon guided the Storm through a thrilling playoff run with packed crowds and themed dress days. The team advanced to the NEPSAC Semifinals and proved they belonged among the top teams in New England.
The team’s passion and energy brought a sense of unity to the season. Students showed up in force to cheer on their classmates. The team’s connection with the community was one of its greatest strengths, and they gave the SLS community plenty to cheer about.
The roster was anchored by a strong senior class, including Captains Matt Staub and Tripp Beasley—the latter committed to playing Division I baseball at Villanova University. Nate Kesselmark ‘26 was a dominant pitcher, and Gage Saresky ‘26 was a vocal leader behind the plate. Their leadership and chemistry carried the team through tight moments, especially in the FAA tournament when clutch hitting and sharp defense defined the Storm’s championship run.
This season showed us that SLS’ baseball culture is thriving, competitive, energized, and deeply rooted in the school’s identity.
Girls Varsity Tennis: Grace, Grit, and a NEPSAC Finals Appearance
Girls varsity tennis had a remarkable postseason. They battled through the NEPSAC bracket and finished as finalists in the championship match. Led by coaches Brinley Ehlers and Tish Tregellas, the team displayed composure, mental toughness, and elegant athleticism on the court.
Captains Ainsley Birmingham ‘25 and Kate Edwards ‘25 led the team and modeled what it means to compete with integrity and focus. Their leadership helped create a supportive and high-performing environment where every match was a testament to the team’s dedication and preparation.
Though the season ended just short of a NEPSAC title, the journey to the finals was a significant achievement and proof of how far the program has come.
SLS Storm Athletics on the Rise
Looking back on the accomplishments of the spring season, athletic director Anna Knechtel underscored the broader momentum building across SLS.
“This postseason success is a reflection of our incredible student-athletes, coaches, and community,” said Knechtel. “SLS is the place to be if you want the perfect balance of high academic achievement and serious athletic competition. We see that balance come to life every season in more powerful ways.”
Dr. Mary Halpin Carter, Head of School, echoed the pride felt across campus.
“Athletics are a core part of who we are as a school,” said Carter. “They bring our community together, build leadership, and create moments that define the student experience. This spring was a beautiful reminder of how powerful that culture can be.”
Looking Ahead
The success of the Spring 2025 season was not a lucky break—it was the result of years of investment, leadership, and a culture that values both character and competition. As the Storm look ahead to next year, the message is clear:
This is just the beginning.
