SLS In the Pink Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

From Caleigh Steele ‘16

St. Luke’s went pink on Wednesday as part of the School’s Pink Out Day to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. The event—organized by Sydney Lowery ‘17, Caleigh ‘16 and Lynden Steele ‘19, and Emma ‘16 and Sarah Powless ‘18 —is now an October tradition on the Hilltop, envisioned to encourage vigilance in monitoring for breast cancer as well as a gesture of support for women and families impacted by breast cancer.

All the girls who organized Pink Out Day have a personal connection to the event, as their mothers are all breast cancer survivors. In addition, St. Luke’s families have taken on the disease in other ways for October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and year round; Kristen Eveland is hosting events at Elm Restaurant in New Canaan to benefit organizations supporting breast cancer research and support services, the Steele sisters Pink Portrait Project hosted a photo event at Waveny Park for twelve survivors and their families and the Powless sisters have led a large contingent in the annual Fairfield County Race for the Cure. As of this October, SLS parent and Board member Kay Krill has helped raise 27 million dollars for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, supporting 17 researchers annually and a total of 108 researchers to date.

On Wednesday at St. Luke's, the wave of pink was created to emphasize the importance of taking all steps necessary to detect breast cancer in its early stages (when the disease is more curable). More than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors live in the United States and an estimated one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

It is the hope of the SLS Breast Cancer initiative coordinators that the Pink Out Day serves both as a reminder to seek out proper screening and as a tribute to those women, and men, who are patients themselves. It was rewarding to see a virtual sea of PINK flooding the St. Luke’s campus, with faculty and students alike showing support for those affected and those leading the fight against this second most common cancer.
