St. Luke's Football Power Past W&M

St. Luke’s Varsity Football team put in a dominant display on Saturday, September 23 to record a 35-14 victory over Wilbraham and Monson Academy.

The Storm started well but had to wait until late in the first quarter to get on the board. Shaka Moales ‘18 ran all the way to the three-yard line on a long punt return to allow Austin Anderson ‘21 to score the touchdown two plays later. Andrew Lau ‘21 added the extra point to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

St. Luke’s extended their lead to 15-0 early in the second quarter when Chandler Greene ‘19 scored a one-yard touchdown and the team added a two-point conversion.

Late in the second quarter Moales was at it again, this time breaking through the line and outrunning the W&M defense for a 90-yard touchdown run. Lau added the extra point to give St. Luke’s a commanding 22-0 lead at halftime.

The Storm started the second period as they finished the first and, following a fumble recovery from Kenny Soares ‘21, wasted no time in increasing their advantage. Michael Hage ‘19 faked a handoff before a perfect 30-yard pass to Seth Kim ‘19 in the endzone for another touchdown.

An interception by Ryan Higgins ‘21 gave the St. Luke’s offense great field position again starting at the W&M 40-yard line and Moales would take full advantage with another impressive run to the two-yard line. Juan Rosario ‘19 found the gap up the middle to complete the touchdown and give St. Luke’s a 35-0 lead.

Wilbraham and Monson continued to work hard in the fourth quarter and were rewarded with a couple of touchdowns to close the gap to 35-14 before the end of the game.

The win sees St. Luke’s improve to 1-1 and head coach Noel Thomas was delighted with his team’s performance: “I am very pleased with the result. It was a real team win highlighted by strong character and maximum effort throughout.”

Next up: St. Luke’s Varsity Football travel to Hamden Hall on Thursday evening at 5pm.
