Boys Soccer Eases Past Hamden Hall
The St Luke's Boys Varsity Soccer team recorded its first FAA win of the season on Thursday, October 13 with a comfortable 4-1 home victory over Hamden Hall Country Day School.
The Storm didn’t get off to the best of starts and, following a defensive mix up, the Hornets took a 1-0 lead after just five minutes.
SLS regrouped and responded to the early upset well and created many scoring opportunities. Halfway through the first period Jake Kavan ‘21 tied the game at 1-1 after a Max Mitchell ‘20 free kick hit the woodwork and rebounded straight into the freshman’s path.
St Luke's continued to open up the Hamden Hall defense and, after some good build up play through Landon Bachman ‘20 in the middle of the field, Max Mitchell played a perfectly weighted pass to Chris Besgen ‘18 who made no mistake to give the home team a 2-1 lead at halftime.
In the second period the Storm continued its attacking prowess and extended the lead after just a few minutes when Julian Velez ‘20 struck an excellent shot from outside the box into the top right corner.
St Luke's would add a fourth goal when Kavan coolly slotted the ball home to complete the 4-1 win with 20 minutes of the game remaining.
Head Coach Ryan Fairhurst was pleased with the overall performance: “The team showed great character to rebound from conceding the early goal and the boys deserve credit as they rallied, created many chances and scored some very good goals.”
Next up: Boys Varsity Soccer travels to Rye Country Day School on Saturday, October 14 for a 12pm game.
