Ready for the Year of the Dog?
In preparation for next week’s Chinese Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, students created colorful decorations. Before classes started on Thursday morning, Mandarin teacher Jingjing Lai and MS art teacher Haley Wulfman collaborated on a painting and craft project where students volunteered to paint pictures of cherry blossoms and make festive paper cutouts. Lai explained, “The paper cutout represents the Chinese character ‘chun,’ which means ‘spring.’ The lower part of the character is changed to a red dog because it will be the year of the dog and red is a lucky color in Chinese culture.” Upper School Mandarin students also helped prepare for the festivities by practicing and painting Chinese characters and symbols for display.
In addition to the decorations, the FLIK team will have a special lunch on February 15 to help commemorate the holiday, and the China Care club will have a Chinese snack sale. Games related to China and its culture will also be part of next week's Chinese New Year celebration.
