Civil Rights Study Tour

St. Luke’s Center for Leadership is offering an exciting new humanities Civil Rights Study Tour in June with Head of Upper School/English teacher Liz Perry, Head of Upper School History Jason Haynes, and Assistant Dean of Students Noel Thomas.
This trip is open to St. Luke’s students in grades 9–12 and will take place March 9–March 14, 2019. On this six-day study tour, St. Luke’s students will travel to the sites of some of the most important and iconic events in the history of the Civil Rights Movement, and will gain a sense of the risk and sacrifice the movement demanded of its participants. Through encounter, reflection, and investigation, students will develop a strong appreciation for the moral courage—and the power of that courage—practiced during the Civil Rights Movement.
Key historical sites in Georgia and Alabama will include the King Center, the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Selma Interpretive Center, and the newly opened Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. The trip will include guided and curated tours along with periods for discussion and reflection. Students will keep journals as part of their learning experience.
This trip is a great chance to understand the power of collective action to change both law and society, and to gain specific knowledge about the people and places that changed American history.
