MS Artwork of the Week: Ethan Crawford '23, Claiborne Beurle '23

Haley Wulfman
Congratulations to Claiborne Beurle and Ethan Crawford for winning Artwork of the Week!

Looking at Claiborne's mask, we could almost believe that the face we see is the face of a living, breathing scuba diver--the eyes peering slightly off to the side, the convincingly real individual clay eyelashes. What you wouldn't know by looking at this piece is how much it has in common with Claiborne's other work of the year. Portfolios filled with experiments...different papers layered together, overlayed with printmaking ink, or maybe thin sheets of foam... If Claiborne is able to snag the opportunity, she's usually combining materials together in surprising new ways. In this mask she has produced a wildly cohesive whole, bringing in cellophane, flexible foam sheets, tape, felt, paper clay, plaster, polymer clay...simply masterful!

If you were to ask Ethan about his mask, he might tell you about the chin of Thanos, a reflection of the character's influence in popular culture. He might also tell you about the numerous excursions he made into the woods around campus and over the weekend, looking for materials. He might forget to tell you about how carefully he thought about visually balancing the different parts of his mask, but if you asked him, his eyes might light up as he begins to tell you about the patterning in black and white, or the mosaic of cellophane in the crown. He might tell you about how he hand-dyed many of the yarns in that crown himself, or perhaps about how his decision to incorporate natural materials was inspired by some other masks he had the opportunity to check out before he started. Either way, if you see Ethan say hello and ask him about his mask. You'll be so glad you did!
