St. Luke’s Parents Learn About Teaching Civil Discourse

S.A.
What is civil discourse and how do we teach our students to engage in civil discourse as an important leadership skill? That was the topic of discussion on Tuesday evening when parents joined St. Luke’s Director of Equity and Inclusion Jaci Nelson, Director of the Center for Leadership Kate Parker-Burgard, and Director of Global Education Beth Yavenditti for a deep dive into the structure and philosophy behind the Community Goals for Learning (CGL) program. The group discussed everything from how to recognize the difference between dialogue and debate (reinforcing that what students learn in CGLs is not always what they see from others outside the SLS community) to the ways student facilitators are prepared to lead CGL discussions. Parents also shared an interest in continuing the conversations at home with their children.

Students will participate in their next CGL on October 22, with a virtual assembly. St. Luke’s parent Alisyn Camerota, CNN anchor and co-host of New Day, will moderate a conversation about the election and party politics between Congressman Jim Himes and Ari Fleischer, a St. Luke’s parent and former White House Press Secretary to George W. Bush. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss what they learned in groups on Friday, October 23. Parents who are eager to foster further conversations around CGL topics can discuss the virtual assembly with students at home.

If you couldn’t make it to last Tuesday’s parent event or just want to listen again, you can find a recording of the conversation here.
