Celebrating Latinx Artists During Hispanic Heritage Month

By: Carrie Meatto, Upper School Spanish Teacher
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, students in Spanish III explored their connection with Latinx art and music. Students chose and researched a song or work of visual art created by Latinx artists. They looked at how the piece reflected the artist’s identity and their own identity. Students answered questions, including: What is the story behind the art? How is it a window into something new? How is it a reflection of me?

Students created a gallery in the St. Luke’s library to display their collection. Each gallery item was accompanied by the student’s writing, telling the stories behind the art and music and how the artist’s work is a mirror of themselves and a window into other identities. Spanish III students invited members of the SLS Community to experience the music and artwork with a guided tour of the gallery and encouraged them to reflect on their connections with the work.
