Theater Arts

The program aims to introduce students to theater as a vehicle for self-expression and a conduit for understanding the human condition. Actors are provided a sequence of study designed to teach the essential skills necessary for building a solid acting technique as outlined by the teachings of Uta Hagen and   Sanford Meisner. The work emphasizes vulnerability, authenticity, and emotional connection. As students progress, advanced classes and independent studies allow them to deepen their understanding and apply their skills in fully produced performances. The program encourages students to “step into themselves,” awaken their artistic passions, and develop a heightened awareness of the world around them by “listening with the ear of their heart.”

The design for theater classes introduce students to theater through the lens of design and stagecraft to create worlds and characters that bring scripts to life through costumes, lights, sound, and scenery. The Theater Arts program also offers robust after-school activities where students are invited to be part of several fully realized theatrical productions. Through the mentorship of skilled adults, students participate as performers, designers, stage managers, and crew. Students are encouraged and invited to contribute design ideas and, through collaboration, learn the vital role each person plays in conceiving of and launching a successful production.
