Girls Squash Take Second Place At Nationals

Dan Clarke
The Girls Varsity Squash team enjoyed a fabulous weekend at The Head 2017 High School Team Championships finishing runner-up in the Division III tournament.

The Storm advanced to Sunday’s Nationals final match at Loomis Chaffee School following three consecutive wins but would eventually fall to St. George’s School 5-2.

St. Luke’s passed a real test in their opening game on Friday 2/10 against St. Catherine’s School from Richmond, VA. The Storm won 4-3 with victories from co-captain Natalie Bachman ‘17, Haley Bloch ‘19, Kendall Boege ‘19 and Ellie Bailey ‘21.

St. Luke’s were without Caroline Pellegrino ‘21, who plays in the #1 spot, and alternate Katherine Pellegrino ‘19 for the first contest. However, Mary Grace Thomas ‘19 was pulled up from the JV squad and battled hard in her first varsity game to make sure SLS progressed to set up a quarterfinal against The Brooks School on Saturday afternoon.

With Caroline back for this match, GVS reverted back to its regular lineup and produced some fine squash on their way to a 6-1 victory against their North Andover, MA opponents. Wins for Pellegrino, Bloch, Bachman, co-captain Caroline Nevin ‘18, Bailey and Boege set up a semi-final against The Shipley School from Bryn Mawr, PA.

In another tight contest, Pamela Jaramillo ‘19 would seal the victory for SLS in an epic encounter, eventually winning 13-11 in the fifth. Wins for Bachman, Pellegrino, Bloch and Boege saw the Storm move on to Sunday’s final with an overall 5-2 score.

St. Luke’s were paired against The Dragons of Newport, RI in the noon showdown but despite some close matches would have to settle for second place. Bachman and Boege got the two points for St. Luke’s and went 4-0 for the weekend.

Head Coach Lucia Mathias said, “I am unbelievably proud of everyone for coming this far and for turning a group of players into a great team.  The girls really wore their hearts on their racquets in the final and gave everything they had.  We were definitely the loudest team out there and the support they gave each other was incredible. It is a huge honor to coach this team.”
