Basketball Programs Fall in FAA Tournaments, Girls Set to Play in NEPSAC Tournament

Dan Lyons
Both SLS Basketball programs dropped their opening round FAA tournament games last Wednesday with the boys losing a close one at Masters School 59-52, and  the girls losing to the School of the Holy Child 71-40 in a neutral site game hosted at Greenwich Academy.  The varsity boys team's season has come to a close, but the girls received the seventh seed in this week's NEPSAC tournament.  They open play tomorrow against Kimball Union Academy in a game hosted at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts.
Storm boys basketball had an up-and-down year, which ended up being signified in their final game at Masters.  The two teams played twice this season heading into the tournament, with Masters taking home comfortable 75-61 and 62-50 wins in the respective contests.  It would have been easy for the lower seeded Storm to fold on the road against a team that seemed to have their number, but instead St. Luke's gave Masters all they could handle, cutting the lead to as little as three before succumbing to the final buzzer.  Storm boys varsity basketball finishes the year at 9-13, but return a very strong nucleus of players for next season, and should continue to improve as a program.

The girls varsity team couldn't keep it as close in their FAA tournament game.  The Storm were able to keep pace with Holy Child in the first half, trailing 35-25 heading into intermission.  After halftime, however, Holy Child went on a major run, and outscored the Storm 36-15 in the second half.  Sydney Lowery '17 finished the game with a team leading 16 points while Meagan Maguire '14 had a breakout game with 11 points for the Storm.

The Storm travels to Deerfield Academy tomorrow to face a very tough Kimball Union Academy team in the NEPSAC Class 'C' tournament at 3:30 pm.  The team and coach Jen Pokorney are excited for the opportunity to play for a New England championship: "The girls are excited to be invited to the tournament, to demonstrate ourselves as a team to be watched in upcoming years. As the head coach, I have been honored to work with such energetic, positive, hard working kids who are growing into the strong team that can compete on our league's level."
