Students Go Forth to Serve: February Donation Drives
Preparing students for a lifelong commitment to learning and social responsibility is at the heart of the St. Luke’s experience. The School’s motto, Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve, inspires students to strive not only for academic excellence but also to be responsible citizens.
Throughout the month of February, St. Luke’s supported local nonprofits by hosting various donation drives, which provided an opportunity for students to partner with local organizations to build a stronger community.
The Friends of Teddy Hockey Stick & Equipment Drive
On Wednesday, Feb. 1, and Thursday, Feb. 2, St. Luke's held a hockey equipment drive in honor of Teddy Balkind. Families from St. Luke’s and the greater New Canaan area were invited to donate new and used gear, including sticks, skates, helmets, goalie equipment, and hockey bags, to Hockey Haven, a nonprofit that helps to make the sport of hockey accessible for under-represented kids in the Greater New Haven area. Following the collection, members of St. Luke’s hockey team and Coach Emily Walsh loaded up the SLS bus and headed to Hockey Haven to drop off the donations. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, equipment was piled up to the ceiling, and a second bus was almost called in!
Teddy Bear Toss
On Thursday, Feb. 9, the SLS Community Teddy Bear Toss — celebrating Teddy Balkind — was held during the SLS Hockey game at the SoNo Ice House. Fans were invited to toss a new teddy bear onto the ice. SLS Hockey players skated around the rink to collect the teddy bears, which were then donated to the local nonprofits Filling in the Blanks and Inspirica. Both nonprofits greatly appreciated the teddy bears, which will add a little cuddly comfort to the children they serve.
SOUPer Bowl Food Collection
St. Luke’s held its annual SOUPer Bowl on Friday, Feb. 10, when students were invited to donate nonperishable food items to the Person to Person food pantries in Norwalk and Darien.
Students placed their donations on tables that represented the team they wanted to win this year's NFL Super Bowl, either the Philadelphia Eagles or Kansas City Chiefs. St. Luke’s slightly favored the Chiefs, but the real winners are those being helped by the donations. Person to Person was overwhelmed by and grateful for the generosity of the SLS community.
Clothing Drive in Tribute to Jordan Robinson
On Saturday, Feb. 11, during the girls varsity basketball game, St. Luke's celebrated the life of Jordan Robinson, a St. Luke's Class of 2022 graduate. To honor Jordan's commitment to build a better world, those attending the game were invited to bring new or gently used clothes to donate to Clothes To Kids, an organization that provides clothing to underserved children in Stamford. There was, as usual, a generous response from the community. The vehicle that delivered the donations to Clothes to Kids was jam-packed with wonderful items from the St. Luke’s community.
